Zixex Club
The Pewsey Zixex Club with their HQ at the Royal Oak, North St (and previously the Phoenix Hotel, River St) was formed in 1963 with the objective of rowing a 21′ wooden skiff from Pewsey, down the River Avon, to the sea at Mudeford.
That goal achieved, over the next 15 years a number of records were set for rowing “to the sea” on local waterways.
The objective, of keeping the “pioneer” spirit alive by organising boat trips on river and canal continues to this day along with keeping the Pewsey White Horse tidy, and hanging the fairy lights over the river Avon come carnival time.
It was in the early ’70s that the club adopted the RNLI as its main charity and the first year’s fundraising efforts saw a donation of £101 being made.
For a number of years, second-hand booksales provided the mainstay of funds until the popular Male Voice Choir concert programme began in 1990. Since then choirs have come from far and wide each Spring in order to provide the entertainment for what is always a packed house at the Bouverie Hall.
Some people have suggested a connection between the club’s name, its activities and the renowned product of a family brewing firm in nearby Devizes!
