Jack Amor
Jack Amor – Old Mother Riley
Even the toughest of men love the excuse to squeeze into dresses, wigs and high heels. For example, when carnival was revived in 1947 Jack adopted the guise of 1940/50s drag artiste Arthur Lucan’s alter ego as his own.
For many years Jack was a familiar sight in wig and pinney, brandishing his collecting bucket not just in the big parade but throughout the fortnight often as not accompanied by a young lady playing the part of his character’s “Daughter Kitty”.
Jack was one of the reknowned Pewsey dynasty of sporting Amors, having so many brothers and sisters that they were able field a football XI of their own. Jack played for Pewsey Vale FC for many a year and Bill of their ilk actually represented Great Britain at football in the 1948 Olympic Games.
Such was Jack’s devotion to the affairs of Arsenal FC that his collecting bucket was decorated in their colours and with the names of their famed players, a Pewsey native and a great supporter of carnival all his life.
